Everyday Awesome.

The Heavens are Personal

So I’m not much of a writer, but my good friend Cole Nesmith asked me to write a piece about the relationship that God has with us through the lens of the eternity of Heaven. Here is what I came up with..

Heaven must smell like the inside of a hymnal.
Ancient. Frail. Trapped. Like a tarp being pulled off of dusty old furniture.

I wonder if my back would hurt from the unforgiving wood of the eternal pew behind me.
Upright. Consistent. Unmerciful. Like a cast reminding me to show my good manners for a guest who was counting my errors against my lack of proper upbringing.

Heaven must sound like weary voices.
Parched. Thin. Waning. Like a chorus of open graves, forever repeating what most certainly could grow stale.

I wonder if my attention will sag under the weight of time and my mind will wander back to the Earth below.
Unfettered. Anemic. Shallow. Like a bulb that burns out leaving a street dimly lit.

For a long time I felt like Heaven would be like a disinteresting church service, only it would never end.
Have you ever stopped to think about what YOU think heaven is going to be like?
How does your view of Heaven reflect your view of the relationship you have with God?
Is it parched? Unmerciful? Shallow? Ancient?

Sometimes Heaven feels distant. Though its always a moment, a breath or lack of breath away.
Sometimes Abba feels distant. Though he’s always a moment, a breath or lack of breath away.

One of my best friends Mom died from an aggressive form of cancer last week. Its interesting how the finality of death leads us to contemplate the eternity of what’s after it. I hadn’t really thought much about heaven for a long time, until recently. Heaven says so much about humanity’s relationship with God.

Heaven is the part of God’s relationship with us where we will finally be unable to reject and ignore all of the promises He has made to us. In his presence we will be unable to deny his love, grace, and acceptance of us. We will be able to exist in relationship with Him finally without sin and all of the hindrances thereof. Forever accepting his profound desire to be near us as it began with Adam and Eve in the garden. Spending everlasting to everlasting illuminated in his great Love for us.

Our mind can not fathom eternity.
Just like our mind can not fathom infinite abounding love.

1 Corinthians 2: 9

9 It is written:
“What no eye has seen,
what no ear has heard,

and what no human mind has conceived—
these things God has prepared for those who love him”

The creator of the entire universe is also the lover of your soul. He intimately cares for you, personally. The place he has prepared for you for eternity is beyond the beauty of what your eye has seen, beyond the harmony of what your hear has heard and beyond what your mind is even able to imagine.

You’re not alone, my son.  I made you for so much more than this.

Don’t be afraid, my child., for I have overcome the world.

Go tell the world that I would die for them to know me.

And I would die for them to live.

And this is life: that they would know you, God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

This is life, child.  I’ll give you everything. And you can stand tall for there is life in me.

Now, let the blood I shed be just enough for you to know that you will always have a home with me–no, you will not be abandoned.

All hell will not stand against us, for only those who choose to die will claim the life I have for them.

So now the question stands: Would you die for me?

Can you hear it? Can you hear my voice? I’ve been calling you since the day you were born, to come home to the place I’ve prepared for you. You’re not alone

I’m convinced that the most moving and deeply spiritual worship is coming out of the hardcore scene. I know we  can’t all identify the music style, but I hope you can connect to what they’re writing about. Looking forward to Sunday, I’m fighting anxiety and of course insecurity when it comes to teaching but I know that I made strong in my weakness and reliance on the Holy Spirit. Pray for me if you feel compelled to. Love you!

There’s something you may not know about me…

Many of you own DVD’s.

I only own one DVD Collection, or should I say the greatest compilation of any pseudo-related films.

The Alien vs. Predator: Total Annihilation Collection

It is very simply comprised of Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, Alien Resurrection, Predator, Predator 2, Alien vs. Predator, and finally, you guessed it Alien vs. Predator 2.

When it comes to film, this is all I need. I don’t ever see myself purchasing any other DVD’s as has been the MO of my adult life thus far. Being it that my favorite move of all time is Aliens, partly due to the story but mainly due to the fact that its simply the greatest film ever made. My profound affection for all of the characters borders on insanity with a dash of  deep familial conviction and am also a big fan of spaceships in general. (Side note, I also include Deep Sea Vessels in this category as the Deep Sea is essentially Deep Space. No its not but its still totally radical, some would even say bodacious).

So when I came across Nate Nielsen’s work I became “Geek Drunk” on “Nerdium Outofcontrolium”. Now, I’m not a big lego guy but his Lego spaceship creations are unbelievable. Take a moment to peruse his Flickr and see what kind of amazing creations he has come up with. Sadly, Nate Nielsen passed away earlier this year but his incredible imagination and unique ability to turn children’s colored blocks into space vessel prototypes lives on. Take a moment to check out some of his stuff below:

Best Break Up Note EVER

I am about to baptize some friends in the lake out by my house, the photo is not the lake in front of my house.
We’re going to sit on my porch and hear each others testimonies and then engage in a practice that our Lord, Jesus Christ did himself.

I love the message version of Romans 6: 1 – 14.

Take a read:

1-3So what do we do? Keep on sinning so God can keep on forgiving? I should hope not! If we’ve left the country where sin is sovereign, how can we still live in our old house there? Or didn’t you realize we packed up and left there for good? That is what happened in baptism. When we went under the water, we left the old country of sin behind; when we came up out of the water, we entered into the new country of grace—a new life in a new land!

3-5That’s what baptism into the life of Jesus means. When we are lowered into the water, it is like the burial of Jesus; when we are raised up out of the water, it is like the resurrection of Jesus. Each of us is raised into a light-filled world by our Father so that we can see where we’re going in our new grace-sovereign country.

6-11Could it be any clearer? Our old way of life was nailed to the cross with Christ, a decisive end to that sin-miserable life—no longer at sin’s every beck and call! What we believe is this: If we get included in Christ’s sin-conquering death, we also get included in his life-saving resurrection. We know that when Jesus was raised from the dead it was a signal of the end of death-as-the-end. Never again will death have the last word. When Jesus died, he took sin down with him, but alive he brings God down to us. From now on, think of it this way: Sin speaks a dead language that means nothing to you; God speaks your mother tongue, and you hang on every word. You are dead to sin and alive to God. That’s what Jesus did.

12-14That means you must not give sin a vote in the way you conduct your lives. Don’t give it the time of day. Don’t even run little errands that are connected with that old way of life. Throw yourselves wholeheartedly and full-time—remember, you’ve been raised from the dead!—into God’s way of doing things. Sin can’t tell you how to live. After all, you’re not living under that old tyranny any longer. You’re living in the freedom of God.

Also included in our time was these scriptures read out loud as an act of worship:

Zephaniah 3: 17 (Understanding his deep affection for us)

17 The LORD your God is with you,
he is mighty to save.
He will take great delight in you,
he will quiet you with his love,
he will rejoice over you with singing.”

Psalm 72: 18 – 20 (Speaking out our adoration for Him)

18 Praise be to the LORD God, the God of Israel,
who alone does marvelous deeds.

19 Praise be to his glorious name forever;
may the whole earth be filled with his glory.
Amen and Amen.

Revelation 22: 1 – 5 (Anticipating the future)

1Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. 3No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. 4They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.

Amen and Amen.

Low Level Owl

Two nights ago I went with my friend Doug to see The Appleseed Cast perform Low Level Owl Volumes 1 & 2 in their entirety. It was in that moment that I realized how heavily my musical tastes have been shaped by those two albums. I would put those albums up there with Cave In – “Antenna” and Bob Marley – “Babyon By Bus” as my favorite of all time. If by chance they’re coming to your city you must go see them. This is a video posted from one of the shows on the tour, its absolutely beautiful. Get on it.
